My father was the third and last child of Arthur and Agnes Binns and was born on 4th December 1917. He was christened at St Philips Church on 6th January 1918.The family were living at 148 Sandal Street at the time of his birth.
My father was educated at Holland Street Infants School where he went on 4th December 1922 (his 5th birthday) From here he progressed to the junior school on 29th June 1925. The school records state that his standard when admitted was 1 and on leaving 6 years later on 25th December 1931 it had improved to VII. He was 14 years old.
He was unemployed for a while but got a job in a bicycle and radio repair shop on Oldham Road, near the junction with Hulme Hall Lane. The shop was called Tranters. He had a bicycle and was obviously interested in them.
He was in the Ordnance Corps and was sent to Sicily, Italy, Austria and Germany during the war.
He was friendly with Walter Moores who lived on Energy Street and they went out for a time with two sisters.
My father then got a job at AV Roe on Greengate, Chadderton. He worked in despatch department and was a clerk. He was later to be promoted and was deputy manager of the department. He worked there through several name changes of the company and retired in the early 80's being a member of "The Forty Years Club"
During my childhood in Sandal Street I can remember both my parents smoked. My mum smoked Nelson, which was a tipped cigarette, and my dad smoked Senior Service which was untipped. This was before it was realised what harm smoking could do to you. He had an operation for a hernia after I married in 1970 and in my childhood I can remember he had a smoker's cough.
My father died on 30th November 1992 . His funeral was held on 3th December, one day before his 75th birthday. He was cremated at Blackley Crem.
He did not leave a will but as the house was in both names it automatically was left to my mother.]
