Mary Ann and Agnes were living at 95 Pearson Street in 1901 census with her godparents, Fred & Margaret Campbell, presumably until her marriage to Arthur. Whilst living at Sandal Street Agnes would do her shopping at the Co-op in Varley Street and also at the local street corner shops. The diet included ox tail broth, liver and onions, tripe and onions, home made hotpots in winter, and salmon and salad in summer. Potato cakes were made from potatoes left over from Sunday dinner, and eaten for tea. Money was tight and sometimes at weekends they would go to the local pub, The Cricketers Arms which was on Bradford Road at the corner of Saxon Street.
