Notes

Note
Etchel Binns, as he was known, was an artist who lived in St. Levan for several years. He was born in Batley, Yorkshire, in 1869 and worked as a self -employed sign writer whilst studying
art in the Sheffield area where he belonged to several societies of artists. He was probably a founder member of the Rotherham Society of Artists. Immediately after the First World War he began to visit West Cornwall and met members of the artist’s colony of Newlyn & Lamorna. In 1922 he bought a plot of land on the hillside in the Penberth Valley. In 1927 he moved to the area and, as a new venture, designed and built a bungalow. In 1930 he spent a considerable time in a London Nursing Home being treated for cancer of the larynx. This resulted in having a tracheostomy tube fitted which limited his speech to a whisper, curtailing his social life and his interaction with other painters.
In the early 1930’s he rented a disused seine loft at Porthgwarra, from St. Aubyn Estate, which he used as a studio. He worked with oils, water colours and etchings and sold much of his work from the studio. Etchel Binns died in 1945, having exhibited at the Passmore Edwards Art Gallery, Newlyn as a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists.
