1840 Feb 24 Marriage certificate at the Parish Church, Bradford, Jonas Binns, age 21, unmarried miner of Denholme, father Joshua Binns, weaver; Mary Sugden age 24, widowed weaver of Denholme, father Thomas Stow. Both marked.
1840 Dec 17 Bradford Observer: Birth on 8 Dec the wife of a poor labouring man of the name of Jonas Binns, Denholme, was delivered of 3 fine boys who are all living and doing well
1841 February 3 Jonas Binns enlisted at Halifax into the 33rd Regiment of Foot. He served in the Army for 12 years & 101 days and discharged on the 10th October 1853. He did join the First Police Force in Melbourne Victoria 1853. His previous calling was that of a miner and that he was a married man.
Jonas appears to have come out to Australia in 1854-55 when the Gold mining fever was out of control. The Eureka Stockade was in full fight and bushrangers were also not in good order. In 1855 Victoria was made a State of its own from New South Wales in Australia.
We had British Police and Soldiers come to assist in setting up the First Police Force in Melbourne.
