1856 Aug 23 Yorkshire Gazette: Whitby Poor Law Union; the Inspectors Investigation:- extraordinary disclosures. The payments being made were too costly so investigation was to reduce them. Emma Binns who was unable to support her children, given relief of 5s. Her husband, still living was the leader of a strike among the joiners, and he left the town to seek work, prior to which he had been in receipt of 24s a week regularly, besides overwork, by which he would make 5s or 6s a week more; and he also had a lodger paying him 10s a week. He had not been on strike more than a week when he went away. The committee think that a case like this should have been dealt with by way of a loan.

1875 Jul 31 York Herald: Edward Binns, joiner, was charged by his daughter, Margaret Binns, with having threatened to kill her. Defence submitted that the girl had been refractory and her father made a sort of conditional threat without really intending any violence
