Arthur was born at 187 Cobden Street, Miles Platting and was the second child already having a brother called Joseph born in 1873. He was christened at St Philips Church on 14th October 1877. He married Agnes Murphy at St Philips Church on 4th March 1905.He was 27, she was 23. The marriage was witnessed by her sister Mary and her husband Charles Miles. Agnes was brought up a Catholic and had to marry in a Cof E church as Arthur wasn't.
From 1905 -1907 they lived at 239 Ridgway Street, Miles Platting when their first child Josephine was born on 22nd January 1906, she was christened on 1st February at St Philips. After 1906 they moved out of the area and Winifred was born in March 1912, have yet to find where she was baptised. It was in South Manchester around Longsight where I think they were living. School records for Holland Street school show that when Josephine started school on 13th October 1913 the address 11 Stamford Road, Longsight was given as first address and 148 Sandal Street as second address so it looks like Arthur and Agnes lived with his parents in Longsight prior to returning to Miles Platting.
They were living at 148 Sandal Street where their last child John Gatley was born on 4th December 1917. He was christened on 6th January 1918 at St Philips. The house was a two up, two down which means two bedrooms and two rooms downstairs, a living room and a kitchen. The toilet was outside in the yard and there was no bathroom. Arthur was a fitter/mechanic and worked on Briscoe Lane. He would travel to and from work on a bus. Arthur died in 1949 of liver cancer. Records show that he was admitted to Crumpsall Hospital on 14th May 1849. He was on ward D5. He died on 26th May 1949 aged 71 years.
