[John Gatley Binns did not move to Stalybridge with his mother and sisters after his father's death. The 1871 census shows him as a lodger with a family called Hamer at 138 Ridgway St; Richard Hamer 64, mechanic, Mary his wife 61, Edwin son 32 mechanic/fitter, Joseph son 22, smallwares maker up and John Gatley Binns 22 lodger, smallwares putter out. Possibly John G was a friend of Joseph as the occupations are similar.
He married Mary Elizabeth Walker at St John's Church, Manchester on 23/5/1872. Details from marriage certificate: John Gatley Binns - 22 - bachelor - glassmaker - 297 Bradford Rd - Joseph - mechanic; Mary Elizabeth Walker - 23 - spinster - 297 Bradford Rd - Joseph - glassmaker. Both literate. Witnesses John Barber/ Sarah Ann Barber. He may or may not have been living at the same address as Mary E on marriage.
The first child Joseph was born in 1873 and was baptised on 8/6/1873 at St Phillips Church. The family stayed in the Miles Platting area and Arthur was born in 1877 and baptised on 14/10/1877 at the same church.
The 1881 census shows them living at 233 Bradford Rd with Mary E's two sisters, John G 30, clerk, Mary E 31, Joseph 8 scholar, Arthur 3 scholar, Alice 22 cotton weaver and Emily 16 cotton reeler. These two are Mary E's sisters although their names on the census are incorrectly down as Binns when they should be Walker.
1891 census shows them at 111 Gledin St, John G 41 a warehouseman, Mary E 41, Joseph 18 pattern card maker and Arthur 13 office boy. Between 1891-1896 the family moved to 213 Ridgway St where they remained until 1906 although his occupation on 1901 census is overlooker.
1907 directory shows John G, a bookeeper as living at 11 Stamford Road Longsight, which I find an odd move to make at their age, as they had always lived in the Miles Platting area.
John G Binns died on 17th July 1907 and was buried at St Lukes Church, Cheetham Hill on 20th in grave 59/35. The burial was performed by M Davies (curate). He was 56 years old. His father and mother were already buried in this grave.
The following notice appeared in Manchester Evening News dated 18th July
BINNS....On 17th inst @ 11 Stamford Road, Longsight the dearly beloved husband of Mary E Binns age 56. Interment at St Lukes, Cheetham Hill on Saturday @ 2.30pm.
Manchester Evening News dated Wednesday 24th July carried the following...

also for the many floral tributes.]
