1861 Aug 17 Morpeth Herald: Clergyman Drowned.—Early on Friday morning the Rev. S. Sowden. incumbent of St. James's Church, Hebden Bridge, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was found drowned in the canal at that place. It appears that on the preceding night Mr. Sowden visited Mr. Edwin Binns, of Multure hall a house situate on an eminence opposite to one on which the deceased gentleman's own residence stands, the canal running along the intervening valley. He left to go home at about half past 10 o'clock, Mr Binns accompanying him part of the distance. The night was dark, and the wind blew in violent gusts. It is supposed that in crossing a bridge where some alterations had been going forward, and loose stones; and rubbish were lying about, Mr. Sowden either stumbled and fell into the water, or was seized with a fit of dizziness, to which he was known to be subject, and so came to his sad end.
