From Kathy Binns:- John has a military career;Trade given as a fustian cutter on discharge papers dated 20 May 1850 St Helena. Served for 11 years 340 days. 7 years 7 months at St Helena.
His conduct good but disease has been aggravated by his vile misconduct. Has been convicted of drunkeness.
Finally discharged 8 October 1850 states he is unfit for duty due to 'chest disease' of a serious nature and not likely to be recovered from. Further treatment is given but illness will not improve.
