1865 Aug 3 Bradford Observer: Benjamin Lobley, overlooker in a factory at Stanningley, was summoned at West Riding magistrates at Bradford by a little girl named Mary Elizabeth Binns, only eight years old on a charge of assault. He had knocked her head against the roller and struck her with a wooden shaft. The girls father asked him why he had done it , his reply was that he only intended to sharpen her up a bit. It was said she was a delicate child. Fined 10s and costs of 10s 6d.. The magistrates said he should be ashamed of himself.
