2016 Lincstothepast.com: Private 30229, Devonshire Regt, 9th (Service) Battalion, former service no. 25086 with South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 Oct 1917 James enlisted in Scunthorpe and was killed in action at Polygon Wood in the Battle of Passchendaele. He was one of 115 men of the 9th Devons killed that day. He was listed as missing. A notice in the newspaper on 17/08/1918 was when he was presumed dead. James' body was exhumed from temporary burial on Passchendaele (2nd Battle of) and was identified by Reg. No on Mess Tin.
